David Jex (Retired)

Dr. David Jex retired from the University of Toledo in 2024. He served as Professor of Music Theory and Composition, along with jazz studies courses, for 41 years. Dr. Jex was also the advisor for music graduate degree students, and was the artistic director our our long-standing Spring Festival of New Music. He also served as a Master Teacher in the College of Arts and Sciences and received a UT Outstanding Teacher award in 2020. Before joining the UT faculty he was an assistant professor at Lycoming College from 1978 to 1983, where he was also an instructor at the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts.

He has degrees from the University of Toledo (1973), Bowling Green State University (1975) and the Cleveland Institute of Music (1978), where he was a student of Donald Erb.

Dr. Jex has won composition prizes and awards from prestigious groups such as the Ohio Arts Council, the Chautauqua Chamber Singers, Louisiana State University, and A.S.C.A.P. Jex is frequently commissioned and performed by professional ensembles. His recent commissions have been composing and conducting works for the Ballet Theatre of Toledo. Wingert-Jones Music and Encore Music published his compositions.
