Importation of Live animals
  • DLAR must receive an Animal Import/Export Request Form before the import process can begin.
  • The receiving institution must meet DLAR's animal health requirements. If they do not, the import may be denied.
  • When approved, animals are received into quarantine. It is important to note that most animals are quarantined in Wolfe Hall DLAR at the main campus.
  • During the quarantine period, these animals are isolated and accessible only by DLAR staff. The animals are tested for common pathogens. Sampling and results may take up to 2 weeks. Once cleared, the animals are released to the appropriate housing room. Quarantine testing fees are allocated in Concur to the Banner index provided on the Animal Import/Export Request Form.
  • In most cases, the receiving institution (UToledo) pays for the shipping/courier fees. These charges are allocated in Concur to the Banner index provided on the Animal Import/Export Request Form.
  • Any administration or miscellaneous fees that DLAR does not cover will be charged to the PI on the monthly per diems invoice.

for assistance or questions

"All animals must be acquired lawfully, and the receiving institution should ensure that all procedures involving animal procurement are conducted in a lawful manner. Transportation of animals is governed by a number of U.S. regulatory agencies and international bodies. Movement of animals within or between sites or institutions should be planned and coordinated by responsible and well-trained persons at the sending and receiving sites to minimize animal transit time or delays in receipt."
