Course Descriptions and Objectives

Session 1A

4:00-5:30 p.m.
Title: Beyond the Classroom: Supporting Success in Level II Fieldwork

Description:

This 90-minute course/presentation examines the assorted reasons why a student might struggle during their Fieldwork Level II placement. The presenters will discuss the goals for Level II Fieldwork, internal and external challenges, underperforming students, overperforming students, and how to find the just-right challenge. Towards the end of the presentation, the audience will have the opportunity to participate in a problem-solving scenario, applying information throughout the course. A summative assessment will be administered last to check for thorough knowledge of the material.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to

  • Recognize and identify qualities of over-performing and under-performing students within level II FW.
  • Distinguish the difference between internal and external challenges that students face during level II FW.
  • Interpret a role-playing scenario, demonstrating how a fieldwork educator (FWed) can effectively manage internal and external challenges faced by a Level II fieldwork student
  • Identify and employ tips in a problem-solving scenario of a FWed that could be implemented with an underperforming student.

Session 1B

4:00-5:30 p.m.
Title: Evaluation and Treatment of Visual Perceptual Deficits Post-CVA and TBI: Considerations for Inpatient Rehabilitation Practitioners

Description:

This 90-minute presentation provides an overview as to why visual perceptual deficits are under-addressed in patients post-CVA and TBI. Additionally, screening tools and interventions to identify and address the deficits will be explored. Topics of this presentation include the importance of vision as a process skill, the levels of the Visual Perceptual Skills Hierarchy, the current barriers to identifying visual perceptual deficits in inpatient rehabilitation settings, the impact of these deficits on daily occupations, and how to utilize a basic screening tool and intervention technique to address visual perceptual deficits. The course will end with the learners applying their knowledge through a case study.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course learners will be able to:

  • Explore vision as a process skill needed for occupational performance.
  • List each level of the Visual Perceptual Skills Hierarchy.
  • Describe 3 common post-CVA and TBI visual perceptual deficits.
  • Recognize the current barriers to identifying visual perceptual deficits in inpatient rehabilitation settings post-CVA and TBI.
  • Identify the impact of visual perceptual deficits on occupational performance.
  • Demonstrate the use of a basic screening tool for a foundational visual perceptual skill
  • Compare and contrast a remedial vs compensatory intervention technique targeting visual perceptual deficits and engagement in daily occupations.
  • Apply the vision hierarchy to a patient case to increase occupational performance.

Session 2A

5:40-7:10 p.m.
Title: Intervention Strategies for Dementia Care: The Role of Occupational Therapy

Description:

This 90-minute course examines the role of occupational therapy practitioners in practice with individuals with dementia. The presenters will discuss trends and statistics regarding dementia and older adults, dementia care and occupational therapy's scope of practice, assessments and evidence-based practice interventions, and indirect services occupational therapy practitioners can provide to shareholders including caregivers and dementia care teams. Embedded throughout the course will be opportunities for participants to apply their knowledge through discussion and simulated intervention planning.

Objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify two examples of what occupational therapy practitioners can do for the dementia population in their everyday practice
  • Compare and contrast assessments for clients with dementia.
  • Plan a 15-minute intervention session utilizing an evidence-based intervention for individuals with dementia that is appropriate for their practice setting.
  • Choose an appropriate resource handout to provide to a caregiver.

Session 2B

5:40-7:10 p.m.
Title: Achieving Meaningful Outcomes: Pediatric AT for OT Practice

Description:

This 90-minute course provides insight into the usage of assistive technology (AT) for the pediatric population and the role of occupational therapy (OT) within this process. The presenters will discuss the following topics: definitions of AT, the importance of AT for the pediatric population, categories of AT, the role of OT through holistic evaluation measures, development of individualized care plans that support AT in interventions, and the OT process within the implementation and usage of AT. The course will conclude with the participants applying their knowledge through an application-based case study.

Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of the three laws pertaining to assistive technology (AT) usage and its growth.
  • Differentiate two key elements between low-tech vs. high-tech technology.
  • Summarize at least 2 barriers preventing the implementation of AT in pediatrics
  • Identify at least 5 key components of the HAAT and SETT models of practice discussed in this presentation that guide the use of AT
  • Describe 2 interventions utilizing AT that would support engagement in pediatric occupations.
  • Formulate two suggestions on AT devices that would be beneficial for the patient case presented.

Session 3

7:20-8:50 p.m.
Title: Ethical Use of AI within Occupational Therapy

Description:

This 90-minute workshop offers insight into the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of occupational therapy (OT). The presenters will discuss various AI sources, current use of AI in OT, and the ethical application of AI in future practice. Attendees will engage in interactive components including group discussions, reflections, and application of AI tools.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course learners will be able to:

  • Differentiate between generative vs non-generative and open vs. closed AI.
  • Identify ethical and unethical applications of AI use in occupational therapy.
  • Recognize credible and ethically aligned sources of AI through analysis of various AI systems.
  • Analyze the different ways in which AI can be used to assist occupational therapists in providing care for their clients.
  • Understand the possible future trajectory of AI and its increasing role in healthcare.
