Accreditation Status and Licensing Information
The Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education; 7501 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814; 301.652.2682; www.acoteonline.org. Graduates of the program will be able to sit for the national certification examination
administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational
Therapist, Registered (OTR).
All 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico require Occupational
Therapists to be licensed. To learn more, visit the American Occupational Therapy Association's website. Licensure requirements generally include an entry level academic degree and certification
from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Some states will have further requirements such as background checks, ethics training
courses, etc. It is the applicant's responsibility to inquire about licensing and
fieldwork requirements prior to enrolling in the OTD program.
UToledo makes every effort to ensure information about educational requirements for licensure or certification information is current, however, state requirements may change. At this time, we
believe that the OTD program meets the educational requirements for licensure as an
OT in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. See this website for a state-by-state list.
Some states might not license, nor fieldwork sites accept individuals with prior
criminal records. A Federal Bureau of Investigation background check will be required
of all students as stipulated by fieldwork site agreements. A felony conviction may
affect a graduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain
state license.
