Students studying in Mulford Library

Self-education is essential to any physician who desires to build a solid foundational knowledge base and aspires to excel in his/her field beyond formal training while providing high quality, patient-centered care in the community. Complementing the clinical experience and personal guidance given by our well respected and dedicated faculty, the sleep medicine fellow is expected to complete the reading assignments provided at each rotation. These reading assignments and references are taken from a variety of sources including the Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine (the standard textbook of sleep medicine), the current edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD), the AASM Case Book of Sleep Medicine, The AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events, the current AASM Standards and Guidelines for the Practice of Sleep Medicine, and the AASM Essential Readings in Sleep Medicine. In addition, the fellow will have the opportunity to attend the monthly Sleep Medicine Fellows Webinar Lecture Series offered for free by the AASM Sleep Medicine Fellowship Directors Council (SMFDC). Self-study is strongly encouraged outside scheduled clinical work hours.

The fellow will participate in the AASM Sleep Medicine In-Training exam (SMITE) typically held in March.
