Educational Program Objectives for the Medical Physics Track
In accord with the stated mission of the University of Toledo “The mission of The University of Toledo is to improve the human condition; to advance knowledge through excellence in learning, discovery, and engagement; and to serve as a diverse, student-centered public metropolitan research university.” We have set the following educational objectives for the Medical Physics Graduates. In the course of their educational program, students are provided the opportunity to gain knowledge, learn skills, and develop professional character through instruction by content experts and by supervised participation in research projects and clinical operations. Educational Program Objectives (EPOs) for the Medical Physics program have been established, and the student’s progress will be evaluated with respect to competence in each of these three areas.
a) A Medical Physics graduate will be knowledgeable
K1. Knowledge of the normal structure and function of the body and its major
organ systems with emphasis on content applicable to clinical diagnostic imaging and/or
radiation oncology.
K2.
Knowledge of radiation and radioactivity, its properties, units of measure, dosimetry
measurement concepts and methods.
K3. Knowledge of the radiation safety practices and procedures including the
determination of
radiation shielding requirements.
K4. Knowledge of the biological effects of
radiation and its application for radiation safety and for radiation treatment.
K5.
Knowledge of the operation and principles used in the systems and procedures associated
with the clinical track.
K6.
Ph.D. students will have a foundation in physics commensurate with the Ph.D. degree
in physics.
b) A Medical Physics graduate will be skilled
S1. The ability to perform the clinical support procedures required of
a medical physicist.
S2. The ability to design and complete independent
research projects.
S3. The ability to communicate effectively, both orally
and in writing, with colleagues, faculty, scientific journals, and research funding
agencies.
S4.
The ability to retrieve, manage, and utilize information for solving problems relevant
to completion of research projects, or for the
implementation of clinical operations or procedures.
c) A Medical Physics graduate will be professional
P1. Practice ethical, responsible, reliable, and dependable behavior in
all aspects of their professional lives, and a commitment to the profession and society.
P2.
Have honesty and integrity in all interactions with colleagues, research subjects,
and other with whom the student may interact in their
professional lives.
P3. Practice professionalism in dress and grooming in
compliance with applicable health and safety rules and with the clinical operating
environment.
P4.
Be compassionate in the treatment of patients and research subjects, and respect their
privacy and dignity.
P5.
Comply with all applicable regulations and requirements regarding health and safety
of self and of others, and of clinical and research ethics
and procedures.
