Gregory Warrell, Ph.D.
One of our Medical physics program Ph.D. candidates, Gregory Warrell, won the third place at the Great Lakes Chapter (GLC) of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Spring meeting held in Ann Arbor May 30, 2013. A total of 15 oral presentations were on the meeting agenda, 9 of them by students from our program. The title of Greg’s paper was: “Experimental evaluations of the thermal properties of a novel thermo-brachytherapy seed for treatment of solid tumors.”
A list of categories used to judge these young investigators included the scientific content, innovative research idea, knowledge of candidate about the subject, effective delivery, etc. In addition to a certificate signed by the chapter’s president, the winners received the following monitory prizes: 1st place: $300, 2nd place: $150, and 3rd place: $150. These prizes were presented at the end of the meeting by the GLC president.

Neelu Soni, M.S.
Neelu Soni has been selected to receive the M.S.B.S. in Medical Physics program Outstanding Student award. Neelu was nominated by the faculty of UToleod Health Science Campus Medical Physics program for significant achievements in carrying out her research project and maintaining high GPA of 3.9. The award was presented at the Graduation Awards ceremony on Thursday, May 31, 2012 in the Grand Ballroom of The Hotel at The University of Toledo, University of Toledo Health Science Campus.

Sean Tanny, Ph.D.
One of our Ph.D. candidates, Sean Tanny, won the second place award of the Ohio River Valley Chapter meeting held at OSU in Columbus, Ohio. The title of Sean’s paper was “Small Field Electron Beam Dosimetry Using Solid State Detectors on the Surface and in the Build-Up Region”, with co-authors David Pearson, George Hancock, and E.I. Parsai.
Our Medical Physics group had submitted six papers to the ORVC Spring symposium where four of the papers were selected for oral presentations and the other two poster presentations. The oral presentations were being judged for the top three papers in the region in a number of categories including the scientific content, innovative research idea, knowledge of candidate about the subject, effective delivery, etc. The winners received the following prizes: 1st place: $500, 2nd place: $400, and 3rd place: $300 which were presented at the end of the meeting by the ORVC president and the panel of judges. All of the other accepted papers received some travel assistance from the ORVC.

Bhoj Gautam, M.S.
Bhoj Gautam, one of our Ph.D. students in Medical Physics won the first place in local regional chapter meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine for presenting his research work. The meeting was held on May 5, 2011 at the University of Cincinnati. Bhoj had submitted a paper entitled “Advantages of Implementation of a Self-regulating Thermobrachytherapy Seed in Treatment of Solid Tumors” and presented his talk at this meeting where over 100 professionals from the tri-state were present.
This was a judged completion and the winners received the following prizes: 1st place: $500, 2nd place: $400, and 3rd place: $300 which were presented at the end of the meeting by the ORVC president and the panel of judges.

Jordyn Detwiler, M.S.
For the Spring 2010 meeting of the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the AAPM held at the University of Cincinnati, our students submitted three papers. Two of those papers were accepted as oral presentations and one of our students (Jordyn Detwiler) won the second place in region.
The accepted papers were: “Thin film CdTe photovoltaic detector performance under diagnostic X‐ray beams” by Xiance Jin, a Ph.D. candidate, and “Dosimetric Comparison of Three Multi‐Lumen Brachytherapy Applicators with the Original MammoSite® Balloon Used in Partial Breast Irradiation (PBI)” by Jordyn Detwiler, a M.S.B.S. candidate.
The competition was judged by three senior faculty members from around the tri-state. A whole list of categories were used to judge these young investigators including the scientific content, innovative research idea, knowledge of candidate about the subject, effective delivery, etc. The winners received the following prizes: 1st place: $500, 2nd place: $400, and 3rd place: $300 which were presented at the end of the meeting by the ORVC president and the panel of judges.

Brian Bismack, M.S.
Brian was nominated by the faculty of UToledo Health Science Campus Medical Physics program for the American College of Medical Physics (ACMP) graduate student award. He was subsequently selected as 2010 recipient of this award by ACMP award and honors committee. This award is given to one person annually and carries a certificate plus a monitory value of $1000.00. The student has to attend the national ACMP annual meeting to receive his award and will be featured in the annual ACMP newsletter with picture and description. This year's meeting took place during May 22 – 25, 2010 at the San Antonio Hill Country Resort in San Antonio, Texas.

Zhengdong Zhang, Ph.D.
For the 2010 annual meeting of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) two of our submitted papers were accepted for poster presentations. Of the two, one was titled “A Novel Applicator System for HDR Treatment of Endometrial and Cervical Cancer” which was selected as the Radiation Physics 1st place winner of the Poster Viewing Recognition Award for ASTRO’s 52nd annual meeting in San Diego.
