Career Compass: A Map for Your Legal Career in Business Law

Business law is a broad practice area that implicates a wide range of areas of law and can lead to an even wider range of careers. This field can be divided into at least three broad subject matter areas: corporate law, entrepreneurship (or small business) law, and commercial and bankruptcy law.

Corporate law refers to the law related to understanding and serving clients who are corporations. This subject matter area focuses on such topics as the formation and funding of corporations, corporate transactions, the fiduciary duties owed by management, and mergers and acquisitions. This career map is especially useful for those who are interested in representing closely held and publicly held corporations.

Entrepreneurship law refers to the law related to small businesses as they evolve from the planning stages to mature business entities. This subject matter area focuses on such topics as choice of entity, capital formation, and the myriad of issues associated with running a small business. This career map is especially useful for those who are interested in working with small businesses and helping entrepreneurs achieve their dreams.

Commercial and bankruptcy law covers a broad range of transactions that businesses enter into on a regular basis, including loans, sales, leases, and payments. It also addresses how businesses respond when either a business or an individual is unable to meet their financial obligations. This career map is especially useful for those who are interested in representing both large and small business clients in litigation, transactional, or bankruptcy matters.
