The University of Toledo’s accredited Civil Engineering bachelor’s degree program has been ranked in the top 20 in the country. What our students do best is apply knowledge learned in the classroom to problems in the real world.

UToledo’s College of Engineering is one of only eight engineering colleges in the country to require co-ops for all engineering students. Our graduates are in high demand worldwide thanks to this practical design experience.

Civil engineers make people’s lives healthier, safer and more sustainable. They design, construct and maintain infrastructure, such as shelter, transportation and clean air and water facilities. Graduates with civil engineering degrees are in high demand as the country’s existing facilities age.

Classes in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering emphasize sustainability and green design principles. Our program focuses on four fields: environmental, geotechnical, structural and transportation.

  1. UToledo civil engineering grads get jobs.
UToledo engineering students have a more than 85% job placement rate after graduation.
  2. Learn by doing.
Students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering study computer-aided design, learn surveying techniques and work in teams to solve complex engineering problems. Seniors complete a large, multidisciplinary civil engineering design project. This is the type of work done in a civil engineering consultant’s office.
  3. Support from your peers.
UToledo’s Freshman Interest Group program helps students transition from high school to college. You'll share classes with  a small group of engineering students and be mentored by an upperclassman.

The UToledo Nitschke Engineering Complex is located on UToledo’s Main Campus and has academic, research and business incubation facilities. You get hands-on experience in eight undergraduate civil engineering instructional labs. Civil engineering majors also work with advanced mechanic and thermal science measurement equipment, state-of-the-art computer-aided design software and robotic control systems.
  5. Get involved.
Hone your communication and leadership abilities in student engineering organizations, such as the American Society of Civil Engineers or the Society of Women Engineers.
  6. Add a minor in World Cultures.
This minor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Letters can enhance any program of study. We live in an increasingly diverse country and can benefit personally and professionally from knowing more about other cultures. The program explores intercultural communication, traditions, how people conduct business and more.
  7. Accreditation.
The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Civil Engineering and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.

Benefits of Honors

The Honors College is a community of academically gifted students from all majors on campus. Students take unique Honors classes taught by dedicated Honors faculty and complete an Honors thesis or capstone project in their major, earning the Honors medallion at graduation within their normal program of study. Honors students are challenged to think more deeply and broadly about what they learn. With special academic, cultural, and professional development opportunities, their education extends beyond the classroom.

Honors students can also choose exclusive housing in the Honors Academic Village or the historic McKinnon, Scott and Tucker Halls.
