UToledo’s College of Engineering is one of only eight engineering colleges in the country to require co-ops for all engineering students. Our graduates are in high demand worldwide thanks to this practical design experience.
Civil engineers make people’s lives healthier, safer and more sustainable. They design, construct and maintain infrastructure, such as shelter, transportation and clean air and water facilities. Graduates with civil engineering degrees are in high demand as the country’s existing facilities age.
Classes in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering emphasize sustainability and green design principles. Our program focuses on four fields: environmental, geotechnical, structural and transportation.

Top-notch facilities.The UToledo Nitschke Engineering Complex is located on UToledo’s Main Campus and has academic, research and business incubation facilities. You get hands-on experience in eight undergraduate civil engineering instructional labs. Civil engineering majors also work with advanced mechanic and thermal science measurement equipment, state-of-the-art computer-aided design software and robotic control systems.

Hands-On Learning Opportunities
At UToledo, we take you beyond the textbooks and the four walls of a classroom. These real-world experiences are what help our graduates gain professional skills and land jobs.
Internships
Build your skills, connections and resume by spending three semesters working in paid Civil Engineering co-op positions. The College of Engineering offers co-op opportunities across the United States and in 34 countries.
Civil Engineering graduates often receive job offers from their co-op employers. Every student in the fall class of 2015 received an offer. The College of Engineering’s Career Development Center helps students find placements.
Research
Students work alongside faculty on cutting-edge research. Civil engineering majors have developed plans to get rid of potholes in Ohio roads and developed infrastructure locally and abroad.
UToledo’s civil engineering faculty has received funding from many federal agencies and the Ohio Lake Erie Commission.

Rocket Kids Semester
The Rocket Kids program offers University students a fall, spring or summer semester internship providing recreational programming to U.S. military youth while experiencing the world in locations such as Germany, Italy, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Rocket Kids interns will gain practical experience in programming, leadership, health and wellness, creative arts, performing arts, cultural and literary arts, team and individual sports, adventure and outdoor recreation and STEM education.
