Emily Oehrtman, D.M.A.
Emily K. Oehrtman, soprano, is a visiting assistant professor of voice and opera at
The University of Toledo. She serves as the voice area coordinator, directs UToledo’s
Opera Workshop, and teaches many voice-related courses for majors including diction
and vocal pedagogy and literature for both graduate and undergraduate students. She
also has a select private studio and continues to perform both locally and nationally.
Emily has performed professionally under the direction of conductors like Steven White and William Boggs. Her repertoire of lyric theater roles is highly varied, including Nedda (I Pagliacci, Leoncavallo), Elvira (Don Giovanni, Mozart), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus, J. Strauss), Elle (La voix humaine, Poulenc), Morgana (Alcina, Handel), Belinda (Dido and Aeneas, Purcell), Paquette (Candide, Bernstein), and Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd, Sondheim). She also thrives on concert and recital work, particularly enjoying performing chamber music, underrepresented composers, crossover genres, and new music.
As a director, Emily has worked on both operas and musical theater shows including Menotti’s The Telephone and Amelia Goes to the Ball, Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Pippin (Schwartz), and has served as music director for The Wedding Singer (Sklar). She has also written and directed many scenes programs including both operatic and musical theater repertoire.
Before moving to the Toledo area, Emily previously taught at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio teaching voice, diction, vocal pedagogy, and musical theater. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where she studied Applied Voice with Dr. Constance Haas. She then worked with Dr. Norman Spivey at Penn State’s School of Music, receiving her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. She has a Graduate Diploma from New England Conservatory and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from The Ohio State University where she studied voice with Dr. Robin Rice and vocal pedagogy with Dr. Scott McCoy. She has also studied at summer programs including Brevard, AIMS in Graz, and Oberlin in Italy. Her current research interests include wellness and mental health for musicians, vocal health, vocal pedagogy, and diction pedagogy.
