Rare Book Collections
The rare book collections at the Canaday Center are curated as both a series of separate named collections mainly based on provenance, as well as by groups defined by subject or author. They include books and other library materials that are housed and managed separately from the general collection due to age, rarity, physical condition, or other special or significant characteristics.
To learn more about how we select rare books for inclusion in our collections, please see our Collection Policy LibGuide.
Locating Rare Books
The Canaday Center rare book collections have been cataloged in the University of Toledo Libraries Catalog, called UTMOST. Materials in the rare book collections do not circulate; researchers wishing to use rare books may only use them on site in our Reading Room. Please request rare books from Canaday Center staff by providing each item’s call number. You can locate the call number by searching UTMOST. To determine whether or not a title is in our holdings, filter your search results by Library and select Canaday Center. The call number is under the title in the result list. Library of Congress call numbers are alphanumeric as seen in the example below.

Filter by Library
Enter your keyword into the search box. When the results are generated, look at the column on the left under Filter by Library.

Find Call Number
After filtering by library, look under the title and author information for the call number, which is part of the field that includes location on the left and the call number on the right.
Retrieve the Book
Come to the fifth floor with the call number and we'll pull the book. Remember, our rare books are for library use only.
