College of Medicine and Life Sciences - MD Admissions

Transfer with advanced standing

**Note: We are not accepting transfer inquiries for the 2023-2024 matriculation years.**

Because of the longitudinal and integrated nature of the medical school curriculum, we only accept transfer students in rare circumstances and for compelling reasons. To be eligible to apply for transfer consideration you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is currently enrolled in an allopathic  medical school accredited by the LCME and be on track to complete the pre-clerkship phase of the curriculum at your current medical school. All prospective transfer applicants also must be in good academic standing and have an academic record (undergraduate, graduate, and medical school) free of criminal offenses, negative professionalism reports, and other conduct violations.

Transfers are considered contingent upon space availability in the medical school class. For more information, please see the Policy on transfer with advanced standing.

Initial Inquiry

Prospective transfer applicants must first send an email to the Admissions Office (MedAdmissions@utoledo.edu) stating reasons for the transfer request. In this email, please include:

  • reason(s) for wishing to apply to transfer to The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences MD program with advanced standing;
  • an explanation regarding how you meet the eligibility requirements for transfer indicated above.

Transfer Application

Based on the initial email, the Admissions Office will contact the administrators in charge of the clinical curriculum to determine if there is projected to be space and resources available in the clinical-phase medical school class in order to accommodate a transfer student. If the office determines that transfers will be considered, you will be directed to submit a transfer application containing the following information:

  • The University of Toledo Medical School Admission Secondary Application
  • Copy of the original American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application to current medical school
  • Three letters of recommendation including an evaluation from the dean/associate dean for student affairs of the applicant’s current medical school
  • Criminal background check completed within 6 months prior to the transfer request
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 score report (prior to matriculation)
  • Official transcript from previous colleges/universities
  • Official transcript from current medical school
  • Additional information as needed in order to fully evaluate the transfer application

Interview

Following review of the above application materials, a transfer applicant may be invited for an interview.
