Federal student loan interest rates and fees

Interest rates for the 2024-25 year effective July 1, 2024:

Federal Direct Unsubsidized: 8.08% Federal Direct Graduate Plus: 9.08%

Origination Fees for the 2024-25 Unsubsidized Loans Loan Fee

Loans disbursed on of after 10/01/20 and before 10/01/25 1.057%

Origination Fees for the 2024-25 Graduate Plus loans Loans Loan Fee

Loans disbursed on of after 10/01/20 and before 10/01/25 4.228%

*New interest rates for loans disbursed after July 1, 2025 will be announced sometime in June 2025.

2025-26 FAFSA

The 2025-26 Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available to complete through StudentAid.Gov. The new year's FAFSA comes with a few changes. There are less questions than a few years ago and you must provide consent in order to complete the FAFSA and be eligible for federal financial aid.

For loan change requests:

Please use the Loan Change Form available through your MyUT Portal as a link in the Student Tab and under the ‘My Financial Aid’ heading

GRAD PLUS LOAN INFORMATION

You cannot accept the Grad Plus loan through your My UT Portal. This loan type requires a separate application at www.studentaid.gov

If you are applying for the Grad Plus loan for a specific term, you will need to change the loan period dates on the Grad Plus loan application on studentaid.gov. The application defaults to a Fall/Spring Loan. Please be sure to also complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) after completing the application.

The Graduate Plus Loan application for 2025-26 is now available through Studentaid.Gov.

The 2025-26 loan period dates are as follows:

Fall/Spring: Aug 2025 - May 2026 (Default)
Summer Only: May 2025- Aug 2025
Fall Only: Aug 2025 - Dec 2025
Spring Only: Jan 2026 - May 2026
Summer/Fall/Spring: May 2025 - May 2026 (All three terms, amount split equally)

2025-26 Loan Disbursement Dates for Medical Students

M1:
Fall: Week of July 28th, 2025
Spring: Week of January 5th, 2026
M2:
Summer: Week of July 16th, 2025
Fall: Week of September 29th, 2025
Spring: Week of January 5th, 2026
Summer Billing Information:
For M3s and M4s: The Summer 2025 payment due date is May 5th, 2025. No late fee will be assessed for this payment due date due to packaging students late.
For M2s: The Summer 2025 payment due date is June 5th, 2025
For all classes: If you have enough in loans to cover your full balance due, and have accepted them through your My UT Portal and completed all other requirements, your bill will be paid on the disbursement date listed above, without penalty. If you do not plan to borrow loans to cover your full balance due, please make the required payment by the summer due date to avoid a $100 late fee on your account. Due dates for each term can be found on the Treasurer's Office webpage.

M3:
Summer: Mid-Late May 2025
Fall: Week of August 4th, 2025
Spring: Week of February 9th, 2026
M4:
Summer: Mid-Late May 2025
Fall: Week of September 1st, 2025
Spring: Week of January 5th, 2026
*If you are registered for Flex Time at the beginning of any term OR you are registered for an away rotation that overlaps 2 semesters, your aid will not disburse until you begin a course or clerkship for the current term. In that case, the disbursement date will be later than listed above.
If you are expecting a refund, please allow 3-5 days from the disbursement date for the direct deposit to reach your bank account.
