Honors Toledo GROWs Fellowship
Are you interested in community gardening and small-scale sustainable urban agriculture and need a Summer job? If so, apply for this Toledo GROWs fellowship supported by the Honors College to learn hands-on the fundamentals of greenhouse and garden operations as well as to see the inner workings of successful nonprofit organizations! Priority will be given to Honors students in good-standing with the Honors College.
Toledo GROWs supports more than 105 community gardens in the Toledo metro area, sponsors workshops in producing vegetables as well as healthy eating, and coordinates with other organizations to promote small-scale sustainable urban agriculture. Toledo GROWs maintains greenhouse and small-scale farming operations at their facility on Oneida Street - which includes chickens and honeybees. The experience for Summer participants will go beyond planting seeds and pulling weeds. Students will work directly with the staff of Toledo GROWs to learn about garden operations, sustainable agriculture, and community gardening in the metro Toledo area. Hands-on activities for the student participants will include planting, tending, and harvesting vegetable as well as herb gardens, supervising volunteer activities at the farm, preparing produce for sale, and simple maintenance of building, grounds, and equipment. Other possible opportunities will include assisting with educational programs, helping with events, tending to chickens, and beekeeping. Additionally, the students may be directly involved with outreach to the network of community gardens through the Summer growing season and with other local organizations featuring similar missions. No prior gardening experience is required – just a willingness to work outside and get dirty.
The program pays $13 per hour, and interns will work 25-30 hours per week for up to 300 hours throughout the Summer. There is flexibility in scheduling, but work hours will generally fall between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays (with some weekend work).
