NEXT SESSION:

Interviewing for SUCCESS

The medical school interview is one of the most important and least understood elements of the application process. Despite interviews being a resource-intensive (time, money, personnel) endeavor for medical schools, most medical schools still employ on-site interviews as part of their process for selecting their incoming classes. It stands to reason, then, that medical school admissions committees feel this part of the process is very important, giving them information about applicants that cannot be discerned from letters of recommendation, grade point average, test scores, personal statements, and other pieces of the application puzzle.

In this interactive session we will explore the medical school interview from the perspective both of the applicant and the admissions committee. What are the types of medical school interview—panel, traditional, Multiple Mini Interview, other—and what are the best ways to prepare for each of them? What are interviewers looking for during the interview encounter? What are the aspects of an application that increase the chances of an applicant being invited for an interview—and what are the aspects of an interview that increase the chances of an applicant being accepted to medical school? For UT specifically, what role does the medical school interview play in helping us select a cohort of individuals with the potential to meet our College of Medicine and Life Sciences (COMLS) mission and goals—which includes meeting the future healthcare workforce needs of our region?

During the session you will hear first-hand from an admissions dean, as well as several MD program interviewers. As an added bonus, you will tour the Health Science Campus’s Hillebrand Clinical Skills Center, the location for the COMLS Multiple Mini Interviews. We will discuss how the interview process works at the College of Medicine and Life Sciences at The University of Toledo, and our reasons for switching from the “traditional” interview format to the Multiple Mini Interview format. Our goal for this session is for you to walk away with greater insights about the interview process—insights that will give you a greater opportunity for success in your medical school application journey.

Admission is free. Registration is required. (NOTE: Space for this session is limited. Priority will be given to those UT students who will interview with the COMLS MD program Fall of 2018.)
