Transfer Credit

Types of Transfer Credit

The University of Toledo accepts transfer credit from regionally accredited institutions. These accrediting bodies include:

    • Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges Western Association of Schools and Colleges
    • Higher Learning Commission
    • Middle States Commission on Higher Education
    • New England Commission of Higher Education
    • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
    • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
    • WASC Senior College and University Commission

Students can also earn credit for other types of learning experiences such as Advanced Placement, College-Level Examination Program, International Baccalaureate, Prior Learning Assessment and military credit. The University of Toledo follows the Ohio Department of Higher Education's Transfer and Articulation Policy and participates in the State's transfer credit initiatives. Advanced Placement

The University of Toledo accepts credit for AP exams taken through College Board. To earn credit, students must send their official AP scores to the University. You may find additional information on our Advanced Placement page. 

American Council on Education (ACE) Recommended Credit

The University of Toledo accepts credit for courses recoginzed on the ACE National Guide. To earn credit, students must send their official ACE transcript to the University. 

College-Level Examination Program

The University of Toledo accepts credit for CLEP exams taken through College Board. To earn credit, students must send their official scores to the University. You may find additional information on our College-Level Examination Program page.

International Baccalaureate

The University of Toledo accepts credit for IB courses taken in high school. To earn credit, students must send their official scores to the University. You may find additional information on our International Baccalaureate page.

Prior Learning Assessment

Students who are not eligible for transfer credit, may earn credit for relevant knowledge, work, and life experiences through the PLA process. You may find additional information on the PLA page. 

Military Credit

Students who have earned military credit may be awarded credit hours toward their degree. The University of Toledo uses the ACE Military Guide to determine the credit earned and transfer equivalencies. To earn credit, students must submit their official Joint Service Transcript to the Military Service Center or to the Registrar's Office 

Military Transfer Assurance Guides (MTAGs) provides a statewide guarantee that certain military credit is awarded for military training, experience and coursework. You may find additional information provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education

Career-Technical Assurance Guides (CTAG)

Students may earn credit for courses taken in high school as a part of an approved career technical program. Students must successfully complete the course and grant permission for colleges and universities to post the credit when taking the End of Course exam. The University of Toledo will be notified when students complete an approved program and will post the credit to the student record. Additional information is provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Industry Recognized Credential Transfer Assurance Guides (ITAG)

Students who have earned industry recognized credentials (license/certification) have the opportunity to earn college credit. Students must currently hold the credential to qualify and verification of the credential is required. Additional information is provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Ohio Transfer 36

Ohio Transfer 36 provides a guaranteed set of courses that will be applied toward the general education requirements at a State institution when transferring.  The OT36 is a minimum of 36 semester hours of lower level courses that apply toward the following areas: English composition,  mathematics, statistics and logic, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and natural sciences. Oral communication and interdisciplinary areas may be included as additional options.  Additional information is provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways (OGTP)

Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathways provide a path for students completing an associates degree to then work toward a bachelor's degree in a related major. The coursework taken toward an associates degree will be applied toward a bachelor's degree.  Additional information is provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Transfer Assurance Guides (TAG)

Transfer Assurance Guides consist of OT36 and other courses that may apply toward a student's program. TAGs are used as an advising tool for students in planning to transfer into a specific major. Additional information is provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
