Laurie Spencer,
Urban Cairn: A site specific coil built ceramic dome at the University of Toledo's Toledo Museum of Art Campus.
For
many years Laurie Spencer has produced large scale site-specific clay
structures which function as spiritual vessels and create within them
intimate spaces conducive to meditation.
Urban Cairn will be
produced in the sculpture court of the Center for Sculptural Studies by
University of Toledo students under the guidance of Laurie Spencer
throughout this coming Fall semester. Laurie will make two real
visits and several "virtual" visits, via the use digital technology,
throughout the project and give a slide talk about her work on
Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 7 pm in the Haigh Auditorium.
Laurie
Spencer's residency has been funded by a University of Toledo
"Strategic Enhancement Award" to fund a visiting artist program
entitled "Emerging Artists".
Laurie will be making actual site visits twice during her residency_
Tuesday, September 1-Saturday, September 5, 2009 (for demonstrations on construction techniques)
Tuesday, October 13- October 21, 2009 for the spectacular 4 day firing of
Urban Cairn.
