Mark Sherry

Ph.D., University of Queensland
Assistant Professor of Sociology

Dr. Mark Sherry received his Bachelor of Arts (Honors), Masters of Arts and Ph.D. from The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He came to the US in 2002, and held three Post Doctoral Fellowships before coming to The University of Toledo.

He is interested in the ways in which people change the world, and challenge power structures that they feel are unjust. His first book, Sellout, explored this topic in the Australian labor movement. It examined the conflicts in Australia's biggest ever industrial dispute (the 1985 South East Queensland Electrical Board lockout). His second book, If I Only Had A Brain: Deconstructing Brain Injury, explores the ways in which people with acquired brain injuries also struggle. Some of them simply struggle to live, while others simply struggle to have a better life in the face of social exclusion, misunderstanding, and many other problems. Dr. Sherry's current research is on abuse and hate crime, and also on identity.

Dr. Sherry loves teaching, and making a real difference in the lives of his students. He has mentored many students, and stays in contact with many of the students from his previous classes. He was voted runner-up in the Best of Toledo "Best Professor" category in 2005 and 2006.
