Sharon GaberSharon Gaber, Ph.D.

Dr. Sharon L. Gaber began her tenure as the 17th president of The University of Toledo in July 2015. An academic with a background in city and regional planning, she came to the UT presidency following six years as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas. She also has been a faculty member and administrator at Auburn University and the University of Nebraska.

At UT, Dr. Gaber is focused on elevating the national stature of one of the country’s most comprehensive institutions of higher education through increases in externally funded research, student enrollment and graduation rates, philanthropic support, and the recruitment of leading academic and clinical faculty.

During her first two years at UT, Dr. Gaber has: increased student enrollment; strengthened the University’s focus on research, including expanding opportunities for students; increased programs and training to improve diversity and inclusion, as well as sexual assault awareness; implemented myriad strategies to promote student success, including requiring second-year students to live on campus and developing programs to help students transfer to UT, as well as graduate earlier; launched additional communication channels for faculty, staff and students; increased faculty and staff recognition; launched the UT Leadership Institute; and enacted numerous cost-saving measures while seeking new ways to generate revenue to help keep a UT degree affordable.

Dr. Gaber has secured millions in research funding and is the author of more than 40 peer-reviewed articles researching and analyzing regional and urban planning, public policy and the social dynamics that affect community decision-making. She also is the co-author of a book on planning research methods. She currently serves on the boards of the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Regional Growth Partnership, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority and as the MAC representative on the Division I NCAA President’s Forum.

Dr. Gaber earned her bachelor’s degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles, a master’s degree from the University of Southern California, and her doctoral degree in city and regional planning from Cornell University. She is the mother of three, including a daughter who is a student at UT.
