Sr. Vice President and Executive Director of UTMC Hospitals and Clinics
Scott L. Scarborough, Ph.D., CPA, CHFP Dr. Scott Scarborough joined the University of Toledo as Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration in 2007, bringing 21 years of experience in accounting, auditing, healthcare, and business experience to the post. In May of 2010, Dr. Scarborough was appointed Sr. Vice President and Executive Director of The University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC).
Over the past two years, UTMC has undergone a dramatic transformation. UTMC facilities are in the midst of a $50 million renovation and expansion. Recently, Press Ganey recognized UTMC as having the greatest improvement in patient satisfaction scores in the country. In 2011, U.S. News & World report recognized UTMC as the #1 hospital in the region. In late 2011, The Joint Commission visited UTMC, and the lead surveyor characterized its 2011 accreditation report on UTMC as “the best report I can every recall.” UTMC received only three recommendations for improvement (RFIs) in its final report. In 2011, UTMC opened 22 new ICU beds, renovated existing ICU beds, remodeled common areas, opened a new infusion center, and added operating room capacity and storage. In early 2012, UTMC opened a new wound center, a new primary care center, a new hemodialysis center, a renovated food service operation, and three newly renovated inpatient units. Over the next few months, UTMC will open new physical medicine facilities, a new EP lab, a new hybrid operating room, a new bi-plane suite, a new stand-alone cancer center, a second primary care center, and two newly renovated inpatient units. UTMC’s financial performance has been strong. Operating margins in FY 2010 and FY 2011 were 3.9% and 5.4%, respectively. Days cash on hand have increased from 85 days in 2010 to 170 days in 2012. Prior to joining the University of Toledo, Dr. Scarborough was Executive Vice President at DePaul University, the nation's largest Catholic university. Prior to joining DePaul, Dr. Scarborough served as Chief Executive Officer at the Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Company, an investment management and custody services company that managed over $30 billion of short-term and endowed funds belonging to public entities in the state of Texas. For more than 10 years, Dr. Scarborough worked in higher education within The University of Texas System, which includes six academic medical centers. For five years, Dr. Scarborough served as Vice President for Business Affairs at The University of Texas at Tyler. Early in Dr. Scarborough's career, he worked in public accounting, internal auditing and employee group insurance administration. Dr. Scarborough holds an accounting degree from The University of Texas at Austin, an MBA from The University of Texas at Tyler, and a Ph.D. in strategic management from The University of Texas at Arlington. He is also a certified public accountant and a certified healthcare financial professional. |
