Web Site
The University of Toledo is dedicated to meeting the needs of a diverse audience of web site visitors that often include those with disabilities.
Many with disabilities find navigating the web to be difficult when web sites are not designed with accessibility in mind.
For example, without modification users who are blind often cannot access, navigate, and interpret pages that use a graphical interface; people who are deaf or hard of hearing cannot understand video or auditory material; and computer interfaces, like the mouse, or web pages designed with layered menu system can make maneuvering web pages difficult for people with physical disabilities.
The University of Toledo is making strides towards meeting our diverse audience and creating a web experience that can be navigated and used by all visitors.
Recently UT selected a new content management system with accessibility in mind. OmniUpdate Campus, a content managements system that is designed to enforce web industry standards include W3C, WAI, XML/XSL, RSS, ADA Section 508 and LDAP.
Additionally, procedures and training in creating an accessibility compliant web site has been created to educate and train the more than 400 OmniUpdate users, who update and maintain web content on the 30,000+ UT web pages.
Making the UT web site accessible not only is beneficial to users with disabilities, it serves many other purposes as well.
- Allows web pages to display on mobile and PDA devices
- Positions web pages to work well on tablet and iPad devices
- Improves search engine rankings by using compliant web code such as header tags, meta data and alt tags.
- Usability improves when a site is created with accessibility in mind.
- Demonstrates social responsibility.
If you encounter difficulties navigating our site due to a disability or while using assistive technology, please let us know so we can make needed changes or provide the information in an alternative format. Contact web development at webdevelopment@utoledo.edu
