    College of Graduate Studies, Scholarships and Awards

    Richard L Bostleman Memorial Scholarship (1 award)

    Presented to a graduate student who has successfully completed an undergraduate degree and participated for at least two years in NCAA level intercollegiate athletics at UT. Renewable provided the recipient is making satisfactory progress toward the degree (two years at master’s level, three years at the doctoral level).  -the applications period for this award is currently closed-

    Robert R. Buell Memorial Achievement Award (1 award)

    Presented to a graduate student in any college who best exemplifies scholarly excellence in the physical and biological sciences, has maintained a genuine interest in the social sciences and the humanities, and plans a career in education. One applicant will receive a certificate plus a cash award. The amount varies each year depending upon available funds, averaging $1,000.  -the applications period for this award is currently closed-

    Graduate Opportunity Assistantship Award (GOAP)

    The Graduate Opportunity  Assistantship Program (GOAP), formerly called the Graduate Minority Assistantship Program (GMAP), is part of the College of Graduate Studies Opportunity and Outreach Initiatives which seeks to ensure that adequate funding opportunities exist for all students, and specifically those who have overcome significant educational and personal challenges to pursue higher education but possess the skill, leadership and ability to make a significant impact in their chosen field.  -the applications period for this award is currently closed-

     

    Helen M. Fields Memorial Achievement Award (1 award)

    Presented to a graduate student with an excellent academic record in the field of English or Education. One applicant will receive a certificate plus a cash award. The amount varies each year depending upon available funds, ranging from $350 to $500.  -the applications period for this award is currently closed-

     

    McNair Scholars Award

    This award is available to students applying for admission to a Masters or Doctoral program and who participated in an undergraduate Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement program. 

    • Award: Students will receive a Teaching Assistantship, consisting of a stipend and a tuition waiver for full-time enrollment.  A waiver of the graduate application fee is also provided.
    • Minimum Requirements: Students must participate in a Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement program and be admissible for graduate study according to program requirements.  Up to five (5) awards will be made each fall semester. A letter from the undergraduate McNair program is required.
    • Renewal Criteria: Academically eligible students* can renew this award for up to four years of Doctoral study, as long as the student maintains full-time enrollment each academic semester (excluding summer).   Masters students may renew for two years.

    Michigan Out-of-State Surcharge Award

    This award is available to graduate students who are regularly admitted to a degree program (excluding EMBA, Doctor of Pharmacy, M.D. program, MSBS-Medical Sciences program, and Physician Assistant  program) entering any semester, effective fall 2005 (effective fall 2007 for HSC students) from the following Michigan counties:  Hillsdale, Lenawee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne. This award does not require an application. This award is not stackable with any other scholarship, award, or GA/TA award.

    • Award:  Full out-of-state tuition surcharge ($367.15 per credit hour for 2008-2009).
    • Minimum Requirements: Available to students whose permanent address is within one of the counties in Michigan which include:  Hillsdale, Lenawee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne.
    • Renewal Criteria: Academically eligible students* are automatically renewed for this award until completion of a graduate degree.
    • *Please note that if you are a Monroe County Michigan resident, you may be eligible for an exemption of the out of state tuition surcharge fees.

    Sister Cities Award

    This award is available to students entering any semester, effective fall 2005, and does not require an application. This award is not stackable with any other scholarship, award, or GA/TA award.

    • Award: Covers out-of-state tuition surcharge for full-time enrollment.
    • Minimum Requirements: Available to students whose permanent address is within one of the Toledo Sister Cities/Regions, which include Toledo, Spain; Londrina, Brazil; Qinhuangdao, China; Csongrad County, Hungary; Delmenhorst, Germany; Toyohashi, Japan; Tanga, Tanzania; Bekaa Valley, Lebanon and Poznan, Poland.
    • Renewal Criteria: Academically eligible students* can renew this award for 15 consecutive semesters over a maximum of five years, or until completion of a graduate degree, whichever comes first, as long as the student maintains full-time enrollment each academic year.

    University Fellowships (2 awards for academic year 2008-09)

    Primarily for entering Ph.D. students and those early in their Ph.D. program who have exceptional academic records. It is the highest student award the College of Graduate Studies makes and provides a stipend for the academic year at the doctoral student level by each departmental program, plus remission of instructional fees, out-of-state surcharge, general fees, student legal fee and an insurance subsidy for UT student health insurance. May be renewed up to three years provided the student maintains an outstanding academic record and makes adequate progress toward the degree.  -the applications period for this award is currently closed-

     

    Robert N. Whiteford Memorial Scholarship (1 award)

    Presented to a graduate student to assist in research for the thesis, project or dissertation and further the student’s professional development. One applicant will receive a certificate plus a cash award. The amount varies each year depending upon available funds, averaging $300.   -the applications period for this award is currently closed-

     

    * Academic eligibility requirements can be found in the University General Catalog.

    ** The application fee waiver requires an approved McNair Scholars verification.  When submitting the on-line application, please mark the box for payment by check, and then send the completed form in lieu of payment.
