Donald D. Duhaime, a University of Toledo 1940 Alumnus and local collector, donated the following collection to the Ward M. Canaday Center. The collection is broken into nine separate series focusing mainly on Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil War, Nineteenth Century books, magazines, and miscellaneous objects, such as sheet music, photographs, albums, and books. The eclectic collection also includes a Presidential section, Ohio History section, Lucas County/Toledo section, and George Custer and American War series. The collection is useful in aiding scholars and researchers in Toledo local history, Civil War history, and Abraham Lincoln. Although the main part of the collection is centered on nineteenth century America, it boosts a varied historical look into American and International history, culture, and society.
The Donald D. Duhaime Collection is made up of approximately twenty-one linear feet that were broken down into three main sections: Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, and Nineteenth Century. The three main sections were then broken into nine sub-series: Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, Presidents, Toledo, Ohio and Lucas County, Ohio, Magazines/Journals/Magazines, World Fair/Exposition Materials, and Miscellaneous Materials. Although some of the collection falls out of the Civil War, Lincoln, and nineteenth century, the main bulk deals with the political, social, and cultural history of nineteenth century America. Duhaime, an avid collector, has two previous collections at the Ward M. Canaday Center, and an unprocessed oversize collection, artifact collection, and painting collection are also preserved in the Canaday Center and are related to the Duhaime Lincoln-Civil War, & Nineteenth Century Collection.
