Historical Sketch
The first Rotary Club was founded in Chicago on February 23, 1905 by Paul Harris, a lawyer. Harris, who had recently moved to Chicago, wanted to become better acquainted with other professional men of the city. Through a discussion with fellow professionals, Harris and his friends decided to organize a club to bring together a carefully selected group of businessmen, one from each trade, and let them get to know each other so it would be unthinkable to do business unethically. Only men who were the proprietors of a business, partners in a business, or a corporate officer would be allowed to join so all of the members would be men of authority in their field and share similar interests. Membership would be by invitation only and the name Rotary Club was chosen because the weekly meetings would rotate between the members’ places of business. The mottos “Service above Self” and “He Gains the Most who Serves the Best” were chosen to represent the goal of the newly formed club.
The idea of Rotary spread throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. In 1912 the name “International Association of Rotary Clubs” was adopted to issue charters to clubs outside of the United States. The 1912 Convention was also the first time that The Toledo Rotary Club was represented by delegates.
On May 3, 1912, Charles S. Turner, at the urging of a Rotarian friend from Cleveland, founded the Rotary Club of Toledo. Toledo was the 44th Rotary Club to be chartered by Rotary International. By the end of that first year the Toledo Club boasted 80 members. In 1917, Toledo Rotary along with the Board of Education helped to establish a school for crippled children. Helping crippled children soon evolved into one of the major charitable works of Toledo Rotary along with the development of a camp for Boy Scouts; a convalescence home for crippled children; international medical aid for those in need; capital improvements to existing agencies when local, state, and federal funds are not available; as well as providing scholarships to The University of Toledo for international students. The Toledo Rotary was also instrumental in forming a juvenile court system in Toledo. The Good Fellowship Foundation, to which members are obligated to contribute, helps to support these and various other charitable activities. The Paul Harris Fellow is a title designated to members who have contributed $1000 or more to the Good Fellowship Fund and these moneys support scholarships for 1000 scholars.
In 1959 the Four-Way Test was created. This test, designed for Rotarians to apply to all aspects of their lives, states that before a member undertakes to do something he should ask himself 1. Is it the Truth?
Through this Four Way Test as well as living up to the motto “Service Above Self” the Toledo Rotary Club has grown from the initial 80 members to nearly 500. This mirrors the growth of Rotary in general from that first club in Chicago to 26,000 clubs in 200 countries with 1,000,000 members.
