Historical Sketch
David’s House Compassion was incorporated in 1989 and opened its doors to the public of Toledo in April of 1990. It was founded to provide support for HIV/AIDS victims, inspired by the dream of a young man diagnosed with AIDS, David J. Gercak, who died on September 30, 1988. On January 31, 1992, David’s House Compassion merged services with the grassroots support network NOVA (No One’s Victory Alone). The center offered care and support services with a small staff supported by volunteers to those in the Northwest Ohio community living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. David’s House Compassion was located at 501 North Detroit Avenue, Toledo, Ohio for approximately 15 years until a lack of funding in 2003/2004 forced it to shut its doors for a time until Compass Corp. for Recovery Services took over management.
As an AIDS service organization, the center provided a number of educational and counseling programs, promoting awareness, prevention and therapy. In addition to HIV/AIDS education, David’s House offered programs addressing housing, financial assistance, alternative therapies, employment and legal issues. Throughout the 1990’s, David’s House enjoyed growing support and community awareness, adding additional facilities and services, including a $500,000 expansion in 1997 for a Community Services Center. David’s House was the only HIV/AIDS support home of its kind in Northwest Ohio and over its years of operation helped hundreds of area AIDS victims and their families.
Funded largely through the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development and Ohio Dept. of Health’s Ryan White grants, David’s House also received the support from various community service organizations and through bi-annual fundraisers, the “March on AIDS,” and the “Supporters Reach Out” (SRO) block parties. The center was able to continue offering full services until 2003 when it was forced to cut its residential program. After facing a $200,000 operating budget deficit in 2003 and dwindling financial support from new donors, David’s House was forced to close its doors on April 1, 2004. After announcing its intention to close, Compass Corp. for Recovery Services, an agency overseeing a Toledo addiction treatment agency, stepped in to take over management in April. David’s House Compassion services were able to recover thanks to the continued support of the agency.
