RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am a regional scientist and industrial geographer with research interests in the area of local economic development. In particular I am interested in the dynamics of local economic development in cities that are located in old industrial regions of the United States. My research has been published in a range of geography and regional science journals including the Annals of the Association of American Geographers, The Professional Geographer, Annals of Regional Science, Papers in Regional Science, and Economic Development Quarterly.
I am currently actively engaged with a number of professional organizations. I serve as Chair of the International Geographical Union’s Commission on the Dynamics of Economic Spaces, represent the Regional Science Association of the Americas on the Regional Science Association International Council, serve as Editor for the Americas for Regional Science Policy and Practice, serve on the Editorial Board of Applied Geography, and will begin duties as the next Executive Director of the North American Regional Science Council in January 2013. In addition to being a faculty member at the University of Toledo I have held an appointment as a Visiting Professor in the European Faculty of Engineering at Czestochowa University of Technology in Poland. You can read more about my current research projects here.
