Meet the Chair

Deepa Mukundan, M.D.Dr. Deepa Mukundan completed medical school in India and residency in pediatrics from the Medical College of Ohio, now The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (UTCOMLS). Immediately following that she completed her fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases and immunology at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Mukundan is board certified in pediatrics, pediatric infectious diseases and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. She currently works as Chief in the Division of Infectious Diseases at ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital and Nationwide Childrens Hospital Toledo. She was recognized for her dedication and excellent clinical work with a Proclamation by ProMedica in 2020.

Dr. Mukundan has been a faculty member at UTCOMLS since 2006, most recently serving as the Interim Vice Chair of Pediatrics and as UTCOMLS Associate Dean of Student Affairs. She has served as the Pediatric Clerkship Director, and on numerous committees including the Clinical Curriculum, Curriculum Evaluation and College APT committees, Pediatric Resident recruitment and Residency Evaluation committees. Dr. Mukundan has also served in many committees at ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital (ECH)and was the first medical director of the antimicrobial stewardship program. She has led many of the infection prevention activities at ECH, including during the pandemic.

Dr. Mukundan has received many teaching awards from the Pediatric residents and the Excellence in Career Advising award from medical students. She has also mentored several learners, from undergraduates, medical students, and residents through the years. The University of Toledo Women’s commission awarded the Dr. Alice Skeen’s Outstanding Woman Award in 2016 for her accomplishments and she was inducted as an honorary member of the Alpha-Omega-Alpha Honor medical society in 2018.

She has an active research interest in understanding the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of newer diseases on the horizon. These have included understanding pathogenesis of a) community acquired MRSA infections b) HCV (hepatitis C virus) disease in children following exposure in utero given the epidemic of intravenous drug use and c) exposure to cyanotoxins such as microcystin.

She currently serves as the Vice President of the UTCOMLS Alumni Affiliate Board of Trustees. She also has served as an executive member of the University of Toledo Physicians Board of Directors.

In her free time, Dr. Mukundan enjoys traveling to different parts of the world and to her hometown state of Kerala, India. One of her passions is cooking and trying out different foods and restaurants around the Globe. Spending time with family and friends and being active are things that give her balance in her life.  She splits her time between Toledo and Ann Arbor, where her husband is a physician. She has a son who lives in NYC.
