Message from the Dean

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of Toledo, one of eleven academic colleges and professional programs at UT.

The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio merged in 2006 to form the third-largest public university operating budget in the state. While UT is one of 13 state universities in Ohio, our size is matched by only a handful of public universities nationwide, including the Ohio State University and the University of Michigan.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers more than 45 major programs and 45 minor areas of study, 17 interdisciplinary programs, and pre-professional programs for students going on to legal and medical fields. With approximately 3,000 undergraduates and 600 graduate students, CAS provides a personalized education through a combination of small classes and hands-on research opportunities. Our graduate programs offer PhDs in seven areas – biology, chemistry, history, mathematics, physics, psychology, and SISS (in process) – and numerous master’s degrees. Our student body is highly diverse, ranging in origin from local Northwest Ohioans to international students from all over the globe, and ranging in age from direct-from-high-school freshmen to participants in the state-sponsored "60 Plus" program.

We are very proud of the College’s professors who are nationally and internationally recognized. The nearly 400 full-time CAS faculty members represent a diverse and comprehensive body of knowledge and expertise. They benefit from the collaboration among the disciplines – a rich cross-pollination of resources found in the College of Arts & Sciences. We encourage you to learn about the 19 academic departments and ten research centers and institutes which you will find on this site. In brief, the College provides a varied wealth of cultural and scientific opportunities for learning, research discovery, creativity, and engagement.

Today, technology allows us to inquire into all academic fields in the global village. We are so happy that you are looking electronically into the UT College of Arts and Sciences. We thank you for your interest and time. Have a wonderful e-discovery!
