Gamma Theta Upsilon

Gamma Theta Upsilon

is the International Geography Honors Society.

GTU was founded at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois on May 15, 1928. It became a national society, incorporated in Illinois, in 1931. The local chapter, Zeta Xi, was chartered at The University of Toledo in 1981.

Locally, we try to schedule activities and speakers throughout the year. We are also responsible for planning the fall and spring department picnics. Through GTU, we also have the ability to apply for special funding for conference attendance and travel. As a GTU member, you would be entitled to apply for this type of funding.

Gamma Theta Upsilon is the international geography honors society. It is open to all students who have taken at least 3 geography classes and carry a "B" average. GTU exists to promote awareness of geography and geography careers and to foster a friendly and scholarly environment among geography students and faculty.

The UT chapter of GTU is called Zeta Xi. Locally, we try to schedule activities and speakers throughout the year. We are also responsible for planning the fall and spring department picnics. Through GTU, we also have the ability to apply for special funding for conference attendance and travel. As a GTU member, you would be entitled to apply for this type of funding.

As a GTU member, you will receive and honors cord to wear at graduation. You will also receive the "Geographical Bulletin" quarterly. GTU is recognized internationally, so it is a great resume booster!

There is a $25 fee to join GTU - it is a lifetime fee that you pay only once. To join the local chapter, Zeta Xi, it is $10 per year or $17 for two years. After graduating, you may join the Alumni Chapter if you wish.

We would love for you to join GTU! Here at UT, GTU is vital in planning departmental activities. As a GTU member, you can have a strong say in what goes on around the department!
