 Mission Statement The future of democracy depends on an inspired, thoughtful and informed citizenry. Historical understanding is crucial to that process. National History Day teaches essential historical literacy that motivates students to secure the future of democracy. | Each year the Department of History at the University of Toledo sponsors the District One program of National History Day. On March 21, 2009, more than 160 middle- and high-school students gathered at Rocket Hall—participants from Allen, Defiance, Fulton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Lucas, Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, Williams, and Wood counties. Last year's theme was “The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.” Participants presented their topics in documentaries, Web sites, research papers, exhibits, and performances. Subjects included local historical figures such as Edward Drummond Libbey, nationally known figures like Thomas Jefferson and Marilyn Monroe, and nontraditional ones including Salah ad-Din al-Ayoubi. All members of the Department of History and its graduate students are involved in History Day, either planning and coordinating the event or judging the entries. National History Day is considered by the National Endowment for the Humanities as a model for how to encourage students to become involved in historical research in a creative way, outside the bounds of the classroom. History Day provides the kind of incentive needed to challenge young students to think critically and to encourage them to consider history as more than the dry pages of a textbook. |
