Field Guides
Accurate identification of stream organisms is an important component of data collection.  In an effort to build this skill, the Lake Erie Center will provide online guides to our local aquatic fauna. By using these resources in concert with field activities or as a desktop reference, participants should be able to identify most of the stream creatures they encounter outside their classroom.

A Guide to Common Fishes of the Toledo Area:  The first in our series of guides explores the fish fauna of the Toledo area.  Within these pages you will find identification tips and natural history information on over 40 species of fish common to our ditches, creeks, and rivers. Can't tell the difference between a bluntnose minnow and creek chub? This guide will provide you just the features to look for. Crisp and colorful, we hope to set you on your way to becoming an aquatic biologist!  To download a .pdf verison of this guide, click here.
