William McMillen, Ph.D., was appointed provost and executive vice president for academic affairs on May 16, 2011, after serving as the interim in this position for a year.

Dr. McMillen started at the former Medical College of Ohio in 1982 as assistant to the president following several years as a faculty member and administrator at Bowling Green University. McMillen served in a joint role as vice president for government relations for both the Medical College of Ohio/Medical University of Ohio and The University of Toledo from 2005 to 2006, when the two universities merged. McMillen played a key role in guiding the merger legislation between the two public universities through the Ohio General Assembly.

McMillen received his Ph.D. in English and Creative Writing from Ohio University in 1976. He also earned a Master’s degree in English and Creative Writing from Ohio University in 1972 and a bachelor’s degree in English from University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point in 1969.

McMillen is the author of the novel “Sticks” (Sleeping Bear Press, 2000) and the non-fiction book “From Campus to Capitol: The Role of Government Relations in Higher Education” (Johns Hopkins Press, 2010). His play “Exhibition” was produced by Glacity Theatre Collective in early 2012. For four years he wrote a column on higher education and government relations for The Chronicle of Higher Education. He has also published articles, fiction, and poetry in newspapers, magazines, and literary journals.
