Mike O'Brien is in his fourth year as athletic director at The University of Toledo. Since his arrival on Jan. 22, 2002, the Rockets have won or shared Mid-American Conference titles in four sports. In that same span, UT has made three bowl appearances in football and made post-season appearance in men's and women's basketball. The men's golf team has advanced twice to the NCAA Championships, and seven women have qualified for the NCAA in track or cross-country.

In the classroom, UT has produced high team grade point averages, including a 3.013 overall department GPA in fall 2005.

O'Brien is a member of the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee and is the Mid-American Conference sport administrator for women's volleyball. He also is the conference's athletic director representative to the Bowl Championship Series.

Before assuming the position at UT, O'Brien spent four years as associate athletic director for development at Kansas State University. He also was director of athletics at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and he served as assistant director and then director of development for athletics at the University of Pittsburgh. He also held marketing and development positions in Ball State University's athletics department.

A native of Iowa City, Iowa, O'Brien earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Missouri Valley College in 1975 and earned master's degrees in education from Wisconsin-River Falls in 1982 and in sports management from Western Illinois in 1986. Prior to his administrative career, O'Brien was an assistant basketball coach at three different schools.
