UT Planetarium Presentation: Follow The Drinking Gourd
Friday, Feb. 20 • 2 - 3 p.m.
The American folksong Follow the Drinking Gourd was first published in 1928 and was used by Underground Railroad operatives to encode escape instructions and a map. These directions enabled fleeing slaves to make their way north from Mobile, Alabama to the Ohio River and freedom. In the song, the "drinking gourd" refers to the Big Dipper star formation, which points to Polaris, the Pole Star and North. This beautiful presentation allows viewers to virtually follow the Drinking Gourd.
