Studying the history of art makes students aware of the creative achievements in art and architecture over time. Students explore and analyze artistic style, social context and meaning in both Western and non-Western cultures. They learn about the richness of personal and cultural expression through art.

UTart history majors have a unique opportunity to explore the history of art and architecture at UT's award-winning Center for the Visual Arts adjacent to the world-renowned Toledo Museum of Art. The museum has a famous glass collection; a medieval cloister; art of the ancient Mediterranean world; art from Africa and Asia; European paintings; sculptures, decorative arts, prints, drawings and photographs from the Renaissance to the contemporary; and American art from the Colonial era to the present.

Students gain real-world experience through internships with the Toledo Museum of Art or other local art organizations. They can also take advantage of the museum's extensive collections and research facilities to further study the history of art and architecture first hand.

What to expect when you graduate

Art history graduates find jobs as professors, museum curators, administrators, educators or registrars, librarians, architectural preservationists, fine arts photographers or art dealers. Others use their flexibility, understanding and critical skills in fields such as architecture, law, journalism, business and communication.
