Daniel Hernandez
Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Art/Foundations
Daniel Hernandez earned his Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Painting, from American University, Washington, DC in 2002. His career as an artist, teacher, and arts advocate has melded into an impressively rich set of strengths that mesh well with the UT Department of Art and its focus on an interdisciplinary approach to curriculum.
It is the hope of every professional artist to be represented by a prestigious gallery in New York. As an emerging artist, Mr. Hernandez has already achieved this lofty status. He is currently in the process of delivering work to the Kim Foster Gallery, in NYC for a solo exhibition to open in September 2012. As a result this affiliation, his work is to be included in the group exhibition coinciding with the Frieze Art in London, England. Luminary figures in the artworld, such as Cindy Sherman, Ed Ruscha, Tony Oursler, Paul McCarthy and others are included with Mr. Hernandez in this exhibition.
During 2003-2005, Daniel Hernandez taught internationally as a Visiting Lecturer for the American University, Art in Italy Program, Corciano, Italy. Additionally, during that period of time, he was an Instructor at the Chautauqua Institution School of Art in Chautauqua, NY, both of theses are outstanding programs. Further teaching acumen was gained as an Adjunct Faculty member for Mott Community College, Flint, MI, between 2002-2007. The University of Toledo has already benefitted greatly from his stellar teaching during his brief, but memorable tenure with us as an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Art from 2008-2010. Mr. Hernandez’s teaching approach resulted in innovative, insightful, artworks created by novice students. He was a dedicated, and engaged colleague who pushed his students to excel.
Mr. Hernandez possesses a deep connection to the emerging art scene in Toledo. He served as Managing Director for the Firenation Glass Studio and Gallery, Holland, Ohio. More significantly, he currently holds the position of Art in Public Places Coordinator for The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, a position requiring skillful engagement with members of the Toledo City Council, as well as other members of the greater Toledo community.
