| Description |
General Description: Topics of general interest in humanities: writing and communication; religious, philosophical and ideological traditions; traditional and performing arts. Adult Liberal Studies students only except by program director's permission. Topical Description: when we talk about popular culture, we typically mean television and rock 'n roll music. Those two media define not only generations, but they define our culture in many ways. From the pioneers of network television ("I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show") to specialized cable programming (CNN and the Oxygen network), we will read-and watch-how media entertainment and news reflects the mainstream and, occasionally, defies it. Similarly, as we read, watch and listen to the roots of rock 'n roll (Little Richard and Elvis) to contemporary music (what you & I are listening to today!), we will gain an understanding of how popular culture mirrors our social and cultural values as well as challenges our individual and national identities. No textbook required; readings on web. | |
