General description: Focus on topics of general interest to liberal arts students with particular reference to tools, concepts and analytical methods of social scientists. Students in Adult Liberal Studies only except by program director's permission. Topical description: This seminar covers the basics of architecture, urban geography, urban planning, municipal governance and the infrastructural, economic and social development of cities. This is a mostly descriptive course with emphasis on the reasons and patterns that make the cities grow. The student will become familiar with intra-urban transportation systems, air quality, and urban sociology. Students will grasp the many systems that make cities work or to disintegrate. | |
