To be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Science Program in Civil Engineering, a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA and a minimum composite score of 22 on the ACT (or 1010 on the SAT) are required. Students must also have completed four years of high school math (including trigonometry or pre-calculus) and high school chemistry. Physics is also recommended. Transfer students must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative college GPA and must have college transfer credit for Calculus I and General Chemistry, or equivalents. Students who do not meet the requirements will be considered for the Construction Engineering Technology program. The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
Admission:
Application for admission should designate the desire to study in the civil engineering department in a specific focus area. These areas include:
Application materials should be sent directly to the College of Graduate Studies. Applicants are expected to hold a baccalaureate in an appropriate field from an accredited college or university. Regular admission requires an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. Normally that degree is a BS in engineering in the intended area of graduate study. Students who wish to change from one field to another will normally have to complete some prerequisite work beyond the minimum requirements for a master's degree.
Applicants with baccalaureate degrees from a relevant non-engineering science will generally have to complete some more extensive prerequisite work at the undergraduate level to prepare them for the graduate study in their chosen field of engineering. Depending on the student's background in math and other relevant areas of science, such students may be admitted as a graduate student or as an undergraduate with degree (UWD) to complete this work. When the prerequisite work is extensive, the student may be required to complete a baccalaureate degree in the chosen field before being admitted to the graduate program. Because the math requirements in engineering technology programs are generally significantly different from those required for a bachelor's degree in engineering, applicants with baccalaureate degrees in engineering technology are generally required to complete the B.S. degree in their chosen field before they are admitted into the graduate program. Exception to this policy require a recommendation from the department and approval by the college's graduate committee.
An applicant is considered for admission to the College of Graduate Studies on the basis of several general criteria as well as the minimum specific requirements listed below.
A baccalaureate or professional degree earned from a department of approved standing and granted by an accredited college or university.
A 3.0 point hour ratio for all previous academic work or indicated performance under the fifth bullet (below).
Prerequisite academic work which gives evidence that the applicant should be able to effectively pursue graduate work in the department in which specialization is desired.
Acceptance by the department.
Applicants with less than a 3.0 are required to forward the results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Students with degrees from international institutions are required to forward the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
