Dear First-Year and Transfer Students,
Welcome to The University of Toledo! We are delighted that you have chosen us for your journey of discovery. The University of Toledo offers you excellent academic and extracurricular programs that we believe will provide you the education you need to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Because your first year of college lays the foundation for your entire collegiate career, UT is committed to making your first-year experience (FYE) successful, memorable and rewarding. FYE aims to build and sustain a vibrant educational community committed to the success of every first-year and transfer student. In keeping with this commitment to you, we have crafted a collection of in- and out-of-class experiences that combine academics, residence life and social activities to enhance your first year at the University of Toledo.
How will FYE enhance your first year of college? Here are some examples. Your First-Year Information (FYI) seminar will show you how to check out library books, get to know the campus, and develop successful study habits. If you are worried about your math or chemistry classes, you can get anxiety-reducing tutoring through special FYE programs. African American and Latino students can find everything from advice to mentoring to social activities through FYE events and offices. And if you are a budding filmmaker, you will have the chance to make a movie – and, perhaps, win an Apple iPod – of your first-year experience.
UT faculty and staff members have worked hard to create these FYE programs just for you. Our FYE initiatives will help you connect to our faculty, other students, mentors, the University, and the metropolitan area. You will learn to navigate and become involved in our community in ways that will be meaningful for you and for others as well.
Jennifer Rockwood, Director of FYE, and I are ready to help you in the transition to college life. A loose translation of the motto on The University of Toledo coat of arms is, “Engaging the present, creating the future.” FYE will provide you with the guideposts on your journey of discovery towards a successful future you will create, for yourself and the world.
