Leadership
Program Description
There is no prerequisite for any of the courses listed below; therefore, any master’s
student in any discipline may take any of the
courses. In its entirety, the specialization consists of four required courses:
MGMT 6100 (Leading Through Ethical Decision Making)
This course seeks to challenge students to discover what their core values are and
how
they shape beliefs and actions. The objective of the course is to move beyond emotional
reactions to ethical reflection. This is
accomplished by teaching students to apply the four theoretical perspectives to issues
facing them as business persons.
MGMT 6150 (Leading and Developing Yourself)
This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of topics and experiences
relevant to the development of one’s own leadership potential. The course explores
how leadership competencies can be developed and
applied most effectively in a variety of situations. Contemporary trends in leadership
and leadership development will be examined, and
opportunities to improve leadership capabilities will be provided through discussions,
cases, assessment tools, exercises, and development of a
personal development plan.
MGMT 6160 (Leading With Power and Influence)
Today's leaders depend more than ever on power and influence to get things done.
The
objective of this course is to develop an understanding of the strategic use of power
and influence to exercise leadership in organizations.
Skill development in the diagnosis and practical use of power and influence to mobilize
action, to negotiate, and to resolve conflicts will be
emphasized.
MGMT 6190 (Leading Change and Organizational Improvement)
Leading and managing change and organizational improvement are critical
practices because of increased global competition, rapid changes in the marketplace,
the explosion of technology, increased customer
expectations, and the growing pressures associated with recruiting and retaining top
workforce talent. For organizations to thrive and
survive in the future they must be able to change and develop rapidly to meet the
needs of their customers, employees and shareholders. The
objective of this course is to provide a working knowledge of the key theories and
practices of the change management and organizational
development discipline.
