I began my UT career as a doctoral student in 1979, majoring in exercise science, with a minor in anatomy at the Medical College of Ohio.   Upon completion of my degree in 1987, I was appointed Coordinator of the Kinesiotherapy Center.   The Center provides hands-on rehabilitation experience for KT majors, working with patients referred by physicians in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.   Patients have a variety of neurologic and orthopaedic disorders and injuries, ranging from stroke, parkinsonism, and multiple sclerosis, to common sprain/strains, post-operative joint replacements, and spinal surgeries.   In addition to community patients, UT faculty and staff, their families, and UT students may receive land or aquatic rehabilitation exercises in the KT Center.   A separate program offered through the Center is our Perceptual Motor Development program for children aged 12 months to 21 years with special needs, such as cerebral palsy, autism, Down Syndrome, and gross or fine motor delays.

In addition to running the KT Center, I also teach internship courses in cardiac rehabilitation and orthopaedic/neurologic care, and a kinesiology majors class called Neurologic and Pathologic Foundations of Rehabilitation.

I have been certified and registered as a kinesiotherapist since 1980, and am a member of both the American Kinesiotherapy Association and the Ohio Kinesiotherapy Association.   I have served as the Director, American Board of Registration for Kinesiotherapy for the Council on Professional Standards for KT since 1986.   This position involves all aspects of the national registration examination, from constructing test items, training exam proctors, working with the testing service to assure validity and reliability of the exam and setting the pass/fail mark, and actual administration of the exam itself.   I am a member of the legislative committee for the OKTA, working closely with other KTs in Ohio as we seek state regulation of our profession.

My past research projects have involved biofeedback for stroke rehabilitation, rehab aquatics for post-operative lumbar disc disease, and aquatic exercise therapy for MS patients.   I have been a guest speaker for various community organizations, advocating the use of exercise as prevention rather than rehabilitation.  I am also interested in exercise programming for patients diagnosed with cancer, and hope to begin a research study on this topic in 2004.
