Professor Dennis Parish received his bachelor of education and juris doctorate degrees from The University of Toledo and began his legal career in 1983 as an Assistant Lucas County Criminal Prosecutor. Parish was appointed to the bench in the Lucas County Juvenile Court in 1984 and in 1986 he was appointed Referee (later Magistrate) in the Wood County Juvenile/Probate Court. He returned to the Lucas County Juvenile Court in 1997 and was named Senior Magistrate two years later. In 2005, Parish was appointed Judge of the Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals, where he authored over 180 published opinions. He served two years and remains the only Magistrate, in Ohio history, to be appointed directly to the Court of Appeals.

Professor Parish has served on the Governor’s Juvenile Justice Task Force and was selected by the Ohio Supreme Court as Ohio’s representative to the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA) Conference in Washington D.C. He was the lone magistrate selected to serve on the Ohio Courts Futures Commission and served on the Ohio Judicial College’s Board of Trustees. During his career, he has been appointed to over a dozen boards and commissions and served as president of the Ohio Association of Magistrates, Wood County Historical Society, Wood County Law Library, and Wood County Crime Stoppers.

Today, Professor Parish is a Wood County Parks Commissioner and an adjunct instructor for The University of Toledo College of Law. He teaches Juvenile Law, Sports Law, Trial Practice and Introduction to Law & the Legal System in the master of studies in law (MLW) program. In the past, he has taught Advanced Trial Practice, the Criminal Practice Program (Prosecutor’s Clinic), and several undergraduate courses at UT and BGSU. Parish has been an adjunct instructor at the College of Law for 23 years. He is a nationally recognized lecturer on judicial ethics, having made presentations in over 25 states, Canada, and Costa Rica. For a decade, Parish authored a twice monthly film column for the Bowling Green Sentinel-Tribune and was a former contributing editor for The City Paper.
