Finding Government Information

Many state and federal government programs collect, create, and publish information on a wide variety of subjects.  The University of Toledo Libraries is a Federal Documents Repository, which means that we are a regional collection site for government information.  These items are located in the Government Documents Department on the third floor of Carlson Library.

Finding Government Information in the UT Library Catalog

Government documents can be found in the UT Library Catalog by searching by key word and limiting your search Location: Carlson Government Documents.  To find government documents in the UT Library Catalog that have links to a web site, combine your keyword with the word 'gov'.

Government documents can be identified by their Call Number, which will have a colon (:) in it, and by the Location, which will often be Federal Documents, Ohio Documents, Documents Office, or Microform/Media.

Finding Government Information in Research Databases

The libraries have access to several databases that provide government information, especially legislative information.
  • Gongwer News Service covers the Ohio legislature and state government.
  • LexisNexis Congressional covers the United States Congress, both House of Representatives and Senate.
  • GPO Monthly Catalog is a listing of government published reports, many of which we will have here.

Finding Government Information on the Internet

Many government agencies publish their information directly on the web.  Although the UT Library Catalog contains links to much of this information, you may want to use some of the following web sites to find government information in electronic format:
  • GPO Access: major information sources from the Government Printing Office
  • FirstGov: a portal to state and federal government information by topic or audience
  • Our Online Ready Reference Shelf Government links
