We will provide timely, comprehensive, quality service to the exploratory/undecided students to help them in making appropriate academic decisions at The University of Toledo. The Department of Exploratory Studies strives to enhance and improve the student's transition to the university setting and become successful in his/her selected pursuits.
The Department of Exploratory Studies advisers are most concerned about the care and assistance of academically exploratory/undecided students as they make their adjustments to college life. Intrusive, case management style advising helps students make a connection here at UT as well as aids the advisers in watching the progress each student is making toward their educational goals.
The purpose of the Department of Exploratory Studies is to help students set and implement educational and career goals; therefore we must be cooperatively engaged in the venture. We must create a climate that encourages all students to explore their college opportunities during the freshman year and provide an atmosphere that supports students who are initially undecided. All students will have the needed services available to them, as they are required to meet their various schedules and goals. We will partner with other units in the College of Language, Literature and Social Sciences and throughout the University to deliver services for its student support and enrollment.
After an extensive study, The University of Toledo Board of Trustees approved the creation of an advising center to serve the undecided student; direct from high school, transfers and adult students. The result of that approval, granted in 1999, created the Student Success Center. Additional services we added over the years to include the Transition student, needing additional grades, classes or test scores to enter the college they applied to; and the High School Outreach Initiative Office.
In 2008 The University created the UT Learning Collaborative. The Student Success Center changed their name to the Gateway Programs and joined this unique evolved "college" model to work to support and enhance our students’ academic journey.
Beginning in the summer of 2012 adults, aged 25 and over, as well as students having served in the military were moved to the College of Adult and Lifelong Learning and the Former Gateway Programs became the Department of Exploratory Studies affiliated with the College of Language, Literature and Social Science. The Department of Exploratory Studies remains dedicated to helping students keep their options open while working to find a major that meets their needs and skill set.
