The Herbert B. Schering Scholarship Award in Applied German Studies

The Schering Fund was established in February 1972 to honor the late Professor Herbert B. Schering, who served The University of Toledo for 39 years.  The money in this fund is intended:

A.    To assist UT students who wish to study German language, culture, civilization, and literature either

  • in an approved program in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland or
  • in an approved program in the United States where total immersion in the German language is assured;
  • Recipients shall have completed two German courses at the advanced level (3000 and above), have at least sophomore standing. Preference will be given to German majors and minors.

B.    To assist UT students who wish to pursue an approved internship or work experience in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland;

  • Recipients shall have completed two German courses at the advanced level (3000 and above), have at least sophomore standing. Preference will be given to German majors and minors.

C.    To assist UT students pursuing research in German-related areas, e.g., archival research, either abroad or in the United States;

  • Preference shall be given to German majors and minors, German M.A. candidates and graduate students in the Department of History

D.    To assist students who graduate with a degree in German from The University of Toledo and wish to pursue a graduate degree in German at UT;

  • Preference will be given to German majors and minors

E.    To support the continuation of relationships established as part of the exchange program between the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium and The University of Toledo from 1980 to 2005; and, if monies remain,

F. To support first-year UT graduate students and continuing students in the German M.A. program,

  • Support is renewable for a maximum of three additional years

G. To support undergraduate students enrolled in a German class above the intermediate level during the academic terms of the award year all such students in F. and G. must register for an average of one German course during each term of the award year.

  • Preference shall be given to German majors and minors. Support is renewable for a maximum of three additional years.

Eligibility Requirements for Undergraduates and Graduates
Any undergraduate student seeking financial assistance under A-D& G above must have completed at least two German courses above the intermediate level at The University of Toledo and have at least sophomore standing at the time of the award.  Preference will be given to students who have declared a major or minor in German.  Students receiving an award for study outside UT are expected to return to UT to complete a degree at The University of Toledo. 

Students may apply for more than one type of support identified in above. Total support to any student will not exceed $ 4,000 in any given year.

Administration of the Award
An application consists of a completed application form and a letter of recommendation.
Awards will be made by the selection committee based on the merit of the applicant, financial need, and the availability of funds.  Members of the committee are Juergen G. Mudrow (Administrator of the Fund, Professor Emeritus of German), William J. O'Neal (Professor of History), and Dr. Friederike Emonds(Co-Administrator of the Fund, Professor of German).

The deadline for applications is 1 April.  Notification of awards will be made no later than 1 May.  All application materials are to be submitted to Dr. Friederike Emonds, Department of Foreign Languages, The University of Toledo.
