Frank J. Calzonetti, Professor of Geography and Vice President of Government Relations
Dr. Calzonetti is Professor of Geography and the Vice President of Government Relations at the University of Toledo, an administrative position he has held since July 2011. In this position he is responsible for overseeing the University’s official engagement with elected officials at the federal, state and local level. Dr. Calzonetti also leads major university initiatives for the president, including the proposals for UT’s successful designations as an APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University and the Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement classification. Calzonetti provides oversight to the UT Urban Affairs Center and its Intermodal Transportation Institute. In addition, Calzonetti chairs the UT Water Task Force that was formed in response to the August 2014 Toledo water crisis. Prior to this position, Dr. Calzonetti served as the Vice President for Research and Economic Development at UT where he was responsible for the promotion of research and building the university’s technology transfer and business incubation programs. In this position Calzonetti was responsible for several research institutes, chaired the University Research Council, and implemented a plan to build selective areas of research excellence.
Prior to his arrival at UT in 2000, he was the Director of the West Virginia EPSCoR program under Governor Cecil Underwood and held numerous administrative positions at West Virginia University for over 20 years.
Dr. Calzonetti is the author of three books on energy facility siting and over 40 refereed journal articles in the areas of energy facility siting, industrial location and regional development. He also was the principal investigator and project manager of over $12 million in research funding from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Army Research Office, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Commerce, American Electric Power Service Corporation, and the State of West Virginia.
Dr. Calzonetti holds a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Oklahoma, an M.A. in geography from Wayne State University, and a B.A. in history from Wayne State University. Calzonetti is a frequent speaker on the role of universities in economic development and has spoken and testified in hearings at the White House, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, and at the state legislative committees in Ohio and West Virginia.
