    Curriculuar Practical Training
    FAQ's

Curricular Practical Training is defined to be an internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum, which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.

To Apply for Curricular Practical Training:

    Step #1
You must write a personal letter

    1. Personal Letter:  titled "To Whom It May Concern"

    a.       Introduction: name, country of foreign residence, your academic major, and the date you are expected to complete your degree requirements.

    b.      Clarify specifically which category of training your experience represents:
*a required training internship which earns credits (listed in course catalog)
     * a required training internship which does not earn credits (in catalogue)
*an elective training internship which earns credits (in catalogue) this must be an integral part of your dissertation or program requirements.  (Very few students are able to demonstrate these requirements.)
*a recognized cooperative education experience which is elective or required and is sanctioned by the University (classroom study must be integrated with a structured and supervised off-campus work experience).

       c.   Include the:

    • Place of employment

    • the length of the training experience

    • whether it is full-time or part-time (anything more than 20 hours per week is considered full-time)

    • provide a brief job description

       d.   Indicate that this will be a valuable experience providing you with valuable training and skills that you will use upon entry into your home country.

Step #2: Letter of Certification from your Advisor

Letter of Certification:  from either your department  chairman  or from your academic advisor (this is determined by who arranged for the training experience on your behalf).

    The letter should state:

    a.      Your name, your academic major, and the expected date of completion of your degree.

       b. A statement clarifying (b) and (c) above in Step #1.

    Step #3
You must have a passport that is valid for a minimum of (6) additional months and an I-20 and I-94.
    Step #4
Visit with Temuulen N. Johnson or Peter Thomas and you bring all of the above mentioned documents with you.
After verifying eligibility, information regarding your CPT authorization will be entered into the SEVIS system and a new Form I-20 will be printed indicating your authorization.
    Step #5
You may then begin work off-campus for the approved time frame.

    FAQ's
    Am I eligible?

    A) A student must have completed an academic year of full-time enrollment to be eligible to apply.  Exceptions to this regulation are provided for students enrolled in graduate studies that require immediate participation in curricular training.

    B) If you participate in full-time curricular practical training for more than (12) months in the aggregate, you are not eligible for post-completion of studies practical training.  Contact your department chairman, or your academic advisor regarding possible qualified training opportunities.

    C) Do I have to be taking full-time classes at UT while I do my CPT? Not if your CPT has been authorized to do a full-time required internship or cooperative education experience. You will register as a 1 hour internship or coop and will be considered enrolled full-time. Summer is your authorized vacation and you do not have to be enrolled.

How long can I do CPT?
    Full-time 365 days, part-time unlimited.
May I be paid for my CPT experience?
    Yes. There is no limit.
Is there a fee for CPT?
    No.
How long does it take to process CPT?
