Undergraduate Research
The Department of Energy is the single largest Federal government supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, providing more than 40 percent of total Federal funding for this vital area of national importance. It oversees, and is the principal Federal funding agency of, the Nation’s research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences. Such a diverse research portfolio supports tens of thousands of principal investigators, post-doctoral students, and graduate students who are tackling some of the most challenging scientific questions of our era.
Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI)
This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities.
Community College Institute of Science and Technology (CCI)
This program places students from community colleges in paid internships in Science and Engineering and Technology at any of several different locations. Because of the comprehensive nature of this program many of the participants have felt it has had an enormous influence on their careers. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. They also attend career planning and numerous training/informational sessions. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities.
This program places students in paid internships in Science, Math, and Technology at any of several different locations. The participants in the program have decided on a teaching career in one of these disciplines. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. They also have the mentorship of a Master Teacher who is currently working in K-12 education as a teacher and is familiar with the research environment of a specific National Laboratory. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities.
Department of Energy Journal of Undergraduate Research
An annual journal outlining the work done by the DOE's undergraduate researchers, the facilities and programs, and the people who make it all happen. An extremely helpful and interesting read for anyone who is considering pursuing a program with the DOE! Currently, students can view the last 5 years in a PDF format or the DOE will send a print copy to you!
