This issue of UTHSC Research Notes Contains the Following Items:
- NIH Discontinues NIH Ranking Tables
- NIH Medical Research Results for the Public
- Two new NEJM papers
- The Table of Contents of the June 15, 2007 NIH Guide
1. NIH Discontinues NIH Ranking Tables
2. NIH Medical Research Results for the PublicNIH ranking tables, which had been posted annually, ranked NIH awards by dollar amount. Based on comments received on its plan to recognize multiple principal investigators, NIH has concluded that the grantee community does not think the tables are necessary. In addition, with the advent of multiple PI awards, NIH would not be able to correctly allocate total dollar amounts to individual departments. In place of the ranking tables, NIH has developed a Web-based tool that allows grantees to determine the funds awarded to any organization and to the departments within the entity. <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/award/trends/FindOrg.cfm>
3. Two new NEJM papersNIH invites you to explore their fact sheets to learn more about how NIH is pursuing its goal to make important medical discoveries that improve health and save lives. Review many PDF's containing information on NIH's overall accomplishments and goals and also problem-specific areas of research!

Another NEJM Paper entitled "Clinical Revenue Investment in Biomedical Research" is available at <http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/reprint/297/22/2521>
4. The Table of Contents of the June 15, 2007 NIH GUIDE
The previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available from the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page, at:http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html
All announcements (active plus inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page. Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm is available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
Ifyou have any difficulty obtaining the information you need from the Guide, contact Carol Reichenbach, carol.reichenbach@utoledo.edu, at HSC extension 4252, or Rick Francis, rick.francis@utoledo.edu, at MC extension 6193.
